Bulletin of England part 2

View of London

In front of David's parents house, Blackheath London

After I had arrived, I had to be in England for a couple of weeks before we were married again, so we went to London for a week, where David’s family live. I was looking forward to meeting them and excited about seeing all the famous history and sights.

It was of course important for Citta to meet my family before we got married as otherwise it would have been a little strange on our wedding day. My parents were soon to move house so it was good that we had an opportunity to stay in the house I had lived in when I was a little boy.

National Gallery, Trafalgar Square

I was lucky that the week were in London was a nice sunny one, though nowhere near as hot as in Surabaya. I could wear a t-shirt or dress and my pictures look really good with a nice blue sky. London is a very crowded city but many of the important places are close together and we could walk to them. We also travelled by underground train. It was very old and a bit creepy compared to places like Singapore and Hong Kong.

Trafalgar Square

London has so many famous buildings and sights for tourists to see and so much history. Of course it is a busy city with many visitors but we went there at the end of the summer so it was a little less busy than it can be. We went to a few markets and saw street performers too.

Admiralty Arch; Buckingham Palace is down the road.

One evening we met up with some friends of mine from Indonesia who now live in London. They had all married British men, so it must have been quite funny for passers-by to see this group of Indonesian women with bule.

With niece Livvy Pops in Greenwich Park

David’s family were all kind and nice. They like playing board games, playing sports or using the Wii, and they laugh a lot and can be a bit crazy at times. One game his nieces liked was a role play game where everyone had to take turns and act like an old person with a walking stick, pulling funny faces and walking in a silly way. It was mad and everyone was laughing so much.

Ahem, yes my family can be quite funny. I guess that even if we are a little embarrassed we don’t mind doing things that make everyone else laugh. It is quite relaxed when we stay in London and even though we do not see each other very much during the year, we seem to be very close. My parents liked Citta very much, and my two nieces were so excited to meet her. Everyone felt very relaxed with her and I think they were surprised that her English was good.

London Palladium Theatre

During our stay, David and I went to the theatre and saw the Wizard of Oz and we also went with his dad to a boot sale. This will surprise you but that was very exciting for me as we do not have them in Indonesia. People take things they no longer want and sell them at very cheap prices often from the back of their car or using a little table. I bought a lovely soft toy for Rp2000 and some clothes and would have bought loads if David hadn’t stopped me.

London car boot sale

Yes, Citta likes to spend money but she won’t be able to fit everything in her suitcase when we return to Indonesia. I think she is missing her dog back home, so she was allowed to buy that toy.

Citta and David :)

A week after we returned to Leeds, we were married again in the Town Hall on 6th October 2011..
Our family

A bit strange getting married again of course, but important for my family and daughter as when we married in Indonesia it had been for Citta’s friends and family. The day worked out very well, although it rained the whole time and we did not get any nice pictures outside. The ceremony was a simple one and only my family and a few close friends were invited. Afterwards we went to a nearby Italian restaurant and ate loads, ha ha,  though I wasn’t laughing too much as I had to pay!

Late night ice skating.

Now it is getting very cold. We had a few snowflakes last week and I am hoping to see and touch snow before I leave. Last week we saw Annie at the theatre and next week we are off to London again with Rosa for Christmas, and will stay in mum and dad’s new house, see a Pantomime and go ice skating. That should all be very exciting.

We are getting also getting ready for our journey back to Indonesia in January, when I will start work at an Australian International School in Balikpapan, Kalimantan

Bulletin of England part 1

View of London

I went back to England in the middle of June 2011 and it took a long while for Citta to arrive. At first, her visa was rejected and we were worried whether she would be able to come at all. I got some good advice and had some help from my local Member of Parliament (the people we choose to run the country) and we applied again. This time the visa was given and Citta arrived in early September.

Arriving at Leeds station.

I was very worried and angry when the visa was not given to me. I wondered if I would ever get to see David again which is a bit weird as we were already married. When the visa was eventually given to me it all happened so fast. A week later I was setting off to England. I felt a bit nervous and afraid as I had never travelled overseas without David. My flight was to Qatar where I had to change and get another plane to England.

 Arr

Outside my new home.

Posting mail in a classic English letter box.

I was little concerned about Citta travelling on her own. Flying is easy really as long as you turn up at the airport on time . . . and get on the right plane, ha ha. I was worried she would fall asleep in Qatar and miss her second flight, and asked her to set her mobile phone to wake her up in case she fell asleep in the airport. Knowing where to go at an airport can be a bit confusing when you travel for the first time and when it is not your first language, so I just told Citta to follow the crowds really, as everyone would be going to collect luggage and through customs.

Dressed in a Monk's robe at Kirkstall Abbey.

As well as feeling nervous, I was also quite excited. It is quite easy to go overseas and it was like a big adventure. The 16 hours of flying was so boring. I watched a film and ate some nice food, but could not get myself to have a good sleep. The woman I was sitting next to was from China and she had never heard of Indonesia, which I thought was a bit strange as I had visited China.

At Kirkstall Abbey, a ruined Monastery 30 minute’s walk from our home. It was a sunny but cold day.

The flight I had booked for Citta was quite a good one. She only had to wait two hours to connect and arrived in Manchester, which is not far away from Leeds. I checked online and saw her plane was a little delayed and then caught a train direct to the airport. Annoyingly, it took an hour for Citta to get through customs what with all those visas and passports being checked and Citta had to answer some questions about me and why she was coming to England.

.A sunny day on the York city walls, with the famous cathedral in the background
When I saw David, he looked a little fat, ha ha, but after a few months in England now I can understand why as the food is so scrummy.

Yeah, Citta is fat too now, ha ha.

Leeds is very beautiful, with many old buildings and green places. David says it is the greenest city in England with more parks than anywhere else. We live next to a little forest, though I’m told it is actually a wood, and there are lots of squirrels and birds. I love it because it looks so natural and the air is so fresh. It is also so quiet here. We live near to the University so there are many students. Maybe after high school, you should study at Leeds University :-)

Leeds United A.F.C

Leeds Stadium

In Leeds we went to watch Leeds United (David’s football team) twice and both times they won so he says I am his lucky mascot. It was strange as I don’t really like football but the fans here are more aggressive and expressive so I enjoyed it very much. We also went to Kirkstall Abbey, a Monastery near his home, and spent a lovely day in York, which is about 35 kilometres north of Leeds. The weather changes so much here. It could be rainy, windy or sunny or all 3 at once, and it is always freezing. My hands and feet feel cold even inside the flat with the heating on high!

Cathedral in York city.

Yes, York is really lovely. There is a huge cathedral there and there are city walls all around the centre which you can walk along and look down on everything. It was a lovely sunny day too which always makes it nicer. We went and saw the York Dungeon, a scary historical tour of old England, and enjoyed street performers and food.

Armley Mills Museum.

The strange thing for me being here is how often we walk. I’m so used to using a motorbike in Surabaya, it is a real shock, though there are lots of buses to catch too. We also live near Armley Mills and popped over to see that too. There were huge weaving and spinning machines that were used to make cloth about 200 years ago and we watched them in action and learnt all about the history. There is so much history in England.

Rosa and David.
Rosa and Citta.

Citta has of course met my daughter Rosa now, but being at school most of the time, having bundles of homework and many close friends, we don’t see her as much as we would hope. I went to Spain with her this summer – to Barcelona – before Citta arrived and all three of us will spend a week in London at Christmas. Citta and I have already been to London to see my parents and sisters, so we will write a little more about that trip and our second wedding in part 2.
